Most Vietnam itineraries sold in India are a north-only or south-only compromise, because doing the full length "doesn't fit in a week". It fits fine, Vietnam has cheap, reliable internal flights, and two of them turn a compromise into the whole country. What does not fit is rushing Ha Long Bay as a day trip from Hanoi, which is eight hours of bus for two hours of boat. We sleep on the bay instead.
The overnight cruise is the spine of the trip: kayaking into limestone grottoes in the late afternoon, squid fishing off the back deck after dinner, and waking up anchored among karsts with nobody else in sight. Then Hoi An, which we give two nights because one is a crime, a tailor-made shirt takes 24 hours, and the old town only becomes itself after the day-trippers leave and the lanterns come on. We end in Ho Chi Minh City with the Cu Chi tunnels and a street food evening led by someone who eats there, not performs there.
The visa is the quiet selling point: Vietnam's e-visa for Indians is filled in online in twenty minutes and typically approved within days. Combined with the price of a very good meal being ₹300, this is the trip we recommend most often to families taking their first international holiday and to couples who want maximum country per rupee.

The cruise boat is a mid-size vessel with proper en-suite cabins, chosen after trying the giant party boats and deciding never again.
