The journey

Most Himachal itineraries treat Shimla as a photo stop and race for Manali by lunch. That is backwards. The drive between them is the trip, the old Hindustan–Tibet road through Kufri, Narkanda and the Sutlej valley is where the Himalaya first shows you its scale, and it deserves a full day, not four hours with the windows up.

So we take it slowly. Two nights in Shimla to walk the Ridge and the Viceregal Lodge before the day-trippers arrive, a night in Narkanda at 2,700 metres where the apple orchards run to the horizon, then down along the Sutlej and up the Kullu valley. In Manali we do Old Manali and the Hadimba temple on foot in the morning, and Solang by private vehicle when the light is right, not when the shared-taxi schedule says so.

This is the journey we recommend to families doing the mountains for the first time. Nothing is above 2,800 metres for the night, no drive is longer than six hours, and there is a proper meal and a warm room at the end of every day. It is the Himalaya with the training wheels left on, deliberately.

Where you stay

Old-school hill hotels with working fireplaces in Shimla, a small orchard-side property in Narkanda we have used for years precisely because it has no reason to exist except the view, and a quiet hotel above the noise of Manali's Mall Road. Character over stars; hot water and honest kitchens over lobbies.

Who it’s for

Families with children, first-time mountain travellers, and anyone who wants the Himalaya without acclimatisation maths. Not for trekkers or riders looking for Spiti-grade adventure, this is the gentle shelf of the range, and it is meant to be.
