The journey

Rajasthan is where most Indian families start, and where most itineraries go wrong, too many cities, seen from a car window, in the wrong season. Four cities is the honest number for eight nights. We have argued about the fourth for thirty years and Udaipur keeps winning.

The order matters more than the list. Forts in the morning before the stone heats up, havelis in the late afternoon when the light goes gold, and the drives broken where the food is good, we stop at the same dhaba outside Pali that we stopped at in 1998, because the dal has not changed.

One night in the Thar under canvas, camels at sunset, folk singers after dinner. Touristy? Completely. Worth it? Ask your children in twenty years.

Day by day

Nine days, start to finish. The route, then the rhythm of it.

Days 1–2Jaipurforts & bazaars
Days 3–4JodhpurMehrangarh & the blue city
Days 5–6Jaisalmerliving fort & desert camp
Days 7–9Udaipurlake city & depart
  • Day 1

Arrive Jaipur. Evening at Chokhi Dhani if it is your first time, it is a good first time.

  • Day 2

Amber Fort early, City Palace and Jantar Mantar after. Bapu Bazaar in the evening for the brave.

  • Day 3

Drive to Jodhpur. Clock tower market at dusk, makhaniya lassi non-negotiable.

  • Day 4

Mehrangarh in the morning, the audio guide is excellent, then the blue city on foot.

  • Day 5

To Jaisalmer across the desert’s long straight roads.

  • Day 6

The living fort and the Patwon ki Haveli, then out to the dunes. Camp night under more stars than you have seen.

  • Day 7

Long drive day to Udaipur, broken properly. Arrival by the lake at sunset softens it.

  • Day 8

City Palace, a boat to Jag Mandir, and the last evening free.

  • Day 9

    Depart Udaipur.

At a glance

The facts most itineraries leave out. We print them because they are what decides whether this trip suits your family.

Where you stay

Heritage or haveli-style hotels in all four cities, properties we have used for years, chosen for courtyards and breakfast rather than chandeliers, and one night in a fixed desert camp with attached bathrooms.

Who it’s for

First-time Rajasthan families and visitors from abroad. Comfortable walkers will get the most out of the forts; there are steps and slopes, and mornings are brisk in winter. Not ideal for travellers who cannot manage stairs.
