The journey

Kerala punishes hurry. The state’s whole argument is the pace of water through a paddy field, and an itinerary that does six towns in seven days has missed the point before it starts.

So we do less. Kochi properly, not quickly, the fish nets at sunset, a Kathakali evening where someone explains what the eyebrows mean. One full night and a full day on a houseboat, because the backwaters at six in the morning are the best thing in South India and day-trippers never see them. Then Kumarakom, where the afternoon programme is a chair facing the lake.

Grandparents manage this trip beautifully. So do six-year-olds. That is not an accident.

A heritage hotel in Fort Kochi, a premium two-bedroom houseboat with crew, a lake-facing resort at Kumarakom with a lift, and a plantation stay at Thekkady.

Who it’s for

Multi-generational families and anyone whose ideal holiday involves a veranda. The walking is short and flat everywhere. Not for adrenaline-seekers, the most exciting thing that happens is a kingfisher.
