The journey

Here is what the brochures will not tell you about the Nilgiri Mountain Railway: the magic is the uphill run from Mettupalayam, when the rack-and-pinion engine pushes the blue carriages up through sixteen tunnels and the forest changes from palm to eucalyptus outside your window over four unhurried hours. Most operators put you on a short joyride segment and call it done. We book the proper climb, seats secured well ahead, because this train sells out for good reason, and we treat the journey as the destination it is.

The other correction we make is Coonoor. Ooty gets the fame and the traffic; Coonoor, one station down the line, keeps the charm, Sim’s Park, the working tea estates, Lamb’s Rock and Dolphin’s Nose lookouts where the Catherine Falls drop away below you into the plains haze. We base two nights there deliberately. Tea is done seriously: a factory visit while the rollers are actually running, a proper tasting, and the difference between orthodox and CTC explained once and remembered forever.

This journey lands hardest for three-generation families, the train delights every age simultaneously, which almost nothing else in travel does, and for anyone nostalgic for hill stations as they used to be. Two honest windows: March to June for the season, September to November for clear post-monsoon light and empty viewpoints.

Where you stay

Colonial-era and garden hotels in Ooty and Coonoor that we have used for years, fireplaces that get lit on request, lawns for evening tea, and staff unhurried in the proper hill-station way. Character over chrome, deliberately.

Who it’s for

Multi-generational families and anyone who loves railways, tea or cool air, the three constituencies this journey was designed for. Evenings are cold enough for sweaters year-round; pack accordingly. Not for adventure-seekers or nightlife, the hills close early, and light sleepers should know hill towns start honking cheerfully at dawn.
