The journey

Most Amritsar itineraries get the Golden Temple wrong in one specific way: they take you at eleven in the morning, with the crowds, in the heat, for an hour. The Harmandir Sahib is a place you should see twice, once at dawn when the marble is cold underfoot and the kirtan carries across still water, and once at night for the Palki Sahib ceremony, when the Guru Granth Sahib is carried to rest. We build the itinerary around both, and neither is rushed.

Between the two, Punjab feeds you. This is the one journey where we say plainly: come hungry. Kulcha at the shops that have made nothing else for three generations, lassi in brass tumblers, a langar meal at the temple itself, sitting cross-legged with ten thousand strangers, served by volunteers, is worth more than any restaurant in the country. We also take the Wagah border ceremony seriously: seats arranged early, the crowd’s roar explained rather than just witnessed.

There is quieter history too, Jallianwala Bagh, which we walk through slowly and without commentary at the well, and the Partition Museum, which many guests tell us afterwards was the hour that stayed with them longest. This is a journey that works across three generations, because the distances are short, the food is universal, and the Golden Temple asks nothing of your knees.

Where you stay

One well-located hotel for all four nights, no packing and repacking, which is half the reason this journey suits grandparents. A property within easy reach of the Golden Temple that we have used for years, chosen for its quiet rooms and an early breakfast kitchen that tolerates our dawn temple habit.

Who it’s for

Multi-generational families, food-lovers, and anyone for whom the Golden Temple has been on the list for years. The pace is the gentlest we run. Not for travellers wanting variety of landscape, this is one city done deeply, not five done at speed, and vegetarians will eat magnificently, but teetotal Punjab this is not.
